How To Cure A Minecraft Zombie
Most of Minecraft’s zombies can only be dealt with the old-fashioned way, but zombie villagers have a chance to come back to life…
Recognising Zombie Villagers
Zombie villagers are fairly easy to spot in amongst other zombies, mostly because they are dressed in their old clothes! Note that husks and drowned cannot be villagers – only regular zombies.
There is a 5% chance (one in 20) that any regular zombie spawned will be a zombie villager, and zombies have a chance to turn villagers into zombies by killing them.
On Easy difficulty, this chance is 0% so it never happens, on Normal difficulty the chance is 50%, and on Hard difficulty it is 100%.
There is also one place where you can always find a zombie villager as long as you are not on Peaceful mode, and that is an igloo basement…
Igloo Basements
Half of all igloos have a basement, accessible from a trapdoor hidden beneath their carpet. Inside, you will find everything you need to cure a zombie villager, as well as a zombie villager to practise on.
The main items you need are a splash of Potion of Weakness (brew a spider eye and gunpowder into a water bottle) and a golden apple (surround an apple with eight gold ingots).
In an igloo basement, you will find a brewing stand with a splash of Potion of Weakness already in it and a chest with at least one golden apple! At one end of the room, you will also see a villager and a zombie villager locked up, with a sign suggesting that one can turn into the other…
Applying the Cure
For the best (and safest) results here, keep the zombie imprisoned, as being surrounded by iron bars helps the transformation happen more quickly. Mostly, though, you are just trying to keep the zombie from attacking you.
Begin by throwing the splash of Potion of Weakness at the zombie. Stand back so it doesn’t affect you! If the attempt has worked, you will see small particle swirls surrounding the zombie to show that it has the Weakness effect.
Now select the golden apple, which has healing powers when eaten, and use it on the zombie. If this has worked, the swirls coming off the zombie will turn red.
And Finally…
At this point, all you have to do is wait! As the zombie gets close to being cured, it will begin to shudder, though this can take two to five minutes to complete. The zombie will keep trying to attack, even when it is changing back, which is why it makes sense to keep it locked up.
Ultimately, the zombie will transform back into a villager, and you are free to let them out of the cell at this point! You can even trade with them. If you leave the villager alone, they will attempt to return to the nearest village, though it is often very difficult for them to make it out of the basement. Why not give them a hand?
Just remember, they will need protection on their journey, otherwise they might get transformed back into a zombie!
